Sunday, July 25th 2010 marked the 5th annual Skate the Hate competition. More simply Rollerblading with true aggression. This competition was divided by age, as usual into three divisions, Grom, OG and Open. And as usual, the comp turned out to be filled with people motivated to destroy, and uh, for others… get destroyed. Rag doll falls and destruction are some words that come to mind. Stuck in the sticks and usually only spread by word of mouth, this event and it’s skate spots only happen once a year and are left to be returned to only in the following summer.
An estimated 100 were in attendance, as well as participating companies One Last Ride, Create Originals and Print Brigade. With a mini blading tradeshow and BBQ in action all day skaters and attendees were pleased with a couple options along with the carnage ensuing. All though there was a small altercation involving a veggie burger, and one person disapointed without barbq sauce, hype was able to build and allowed the competition to begin without a hesitation in its pace. With the aid of the rollerblading owned company, Bee’s Moving, and their moving trucks, the playground quickly filled with custom built obstacles and ledges to skate for the first few heats in the day.
With the likes of groms from scattered areas of new england and OG’s from around the coast the mini street course was fufilling some of its potential. Highlights include, 450 disaster topsoles from Dylan hopp and the near crucifiction of Sporter flying across the disaster up gap down pvc rail. And then later 35 year old OG Jonny Wu proving that age is just a number with Royal Gap to Royals on the same up gap down rail. The street course set up was fun but, as the comp progressed, the pace quickened.
With the help of some natural down rails offering multiple rail to rail transfer options and a large set of stairs. The groms opened up on the last spot and gave a preview of only what was to occur later in the day. 17 year old Dave Hartnett of Cumberland Rhode Island, finished out the grom section on an ending note that shook the crowd, a 540 ally-oop sole on the down rail.
The Grom division had many new faces and was the talk of all competitors as they were pulling tricks that could have easily placed them in the top 3 of the Open Division.
The Open Division consisted of various boxes brought to the contest, the kink rail, and the final spot, the down rail with transfer and rail to rail options.
The kink rail was quick and sketchy. Boulders on the side, and a curb at the bottom. Still couldn’t deter everyone even with a crowded runway Mike Dempsey was able to steal a sweat stance down the ledge leading into a sweat stance down the rail. And later Mark Wojda top soled to true top soyale and continued down through the parking lot and pulled a 360 top sole.
The last spot was the down rail. Things quickly changed when Mo Marzuq came speeding by in the heat atempting to land a 540 over the set of stairs. The attempts still got everyone juiced and took the contest to a new level. Julio Amiama then laced full cab ally-oop fish brain. But all tricks couldn’t compare to Mike Dempsey’s fast plant to ally-oop back side unity and then to top it all off he laced perfectly 270 back side back slide to pivot forward acid which sealed his open division victory.
After the announcing of the winners, all Skate the Hate attendees shared in the product toss. Followed by a firework or two, the celebration, finished right before the downpour that quickly followed the competitions end; cleaning up shop til next year.
